News February 2007

In converting my fleet to lipo cells, several models require an upgrade from can motors.

There is a bewildering selection of brushless motors on offer. Selection is made difficult by the inadequacy and inconsistency of data provided by the vendors.

My best hope, for up to 180 watts, seems to be kit-built outrunners. They offer good performance and low cost. They can be tailored to your required Kv. The performance data provided is very helpful.

My first attempt at DIY motor build will be a couple of Komodos.

The Maplin catalogue lists a good range of sizes of enamelled copper wire.

I intend to use it for built-in wiring, where flexibility is not required; servo lead extensions and motor leads. Flexible end extensions will be added where needed.

There should be little doubt about its robustness. After all, it is universally employed in a very demanding application--armature windings.

A time-consuming job. I'm drawing-up my Sunderland for on-line publication.
